Holiday Getaway Ideas

The holidays are a time to slow down and enjoy them with those who we love the most: Our families. One great way to do this is to organize a getaway.

Pick a weekend that everyone is free from social or business commitments so everyone can come. A creative touch would be to make special invitations and give them out. Whether you're a family of 4 or 400, we can help you make a memorable trip. Let us plan your weekend from start to finish.

During your getaway, have a special meal together--Grey Rock's Thanksgiving buffet or breakfast with Santa during Holiday House. Attend an event--"A Christmas Carol" with Gerald Charles Dickens or cookie decorating, also during Holiday House. Allow some free time to particiapte in the things you love best--Ice skating, swimming, or hanging out inthe game room. And finally, snap numerous photos so you can share them with everyone to enjoy.

The bottom line is: have fun together. Talk, tell jokes, share funny stories. Show your family that the best gift they have is each other.

Once in your lifetime opportunity

Gerald Charles Dickens, the great-great grandson of the famous English author Charles Dickens, will visit Heidel House Resort Friday, December 16, 2005 during his final farewell tour. He will present two, one-person performances of the elder Dickens' beloved holiday story, A Christmas Carol, for the final time in his American career.

The English actor uses a variety of voices to portray the 26 different characters that appear in the 1843 story. Dressed in a frock coat, cravat and embroidered waistcoat, Dickens leaps, laughs and sobs as he interprets this timeless tale of the "spirits" of Christmas.

"Staging is very simple, intimate and personal - only a chair, table and hat stand," Dickens explains. "It focuses the audience's attention on the words and performance, without distracting them by clever effects.

"Although I had never planned to involve the audience in the show, I very soon discovered that we were all sharing the experience of A Christmas Carol." He says "It was very natural to use that closeness in the show. Hopefully the audience arrives at the venue to watch a show and leaves feeling that they have been part of it."

Each performance will be enhanced by an accompanying Victorian culinary experience arranged by our chefs. The 3 p.m. Tea Performance features a sumptuous array of special teas, canapés, tea sandwiches and desserts. Tickets are $30 for adults and $20 for children 3-12. (Prices include tax and gratuity.) Click here for a detailed menu.

The 7 p.m. performance includes a full "Five Stave Dinner" with Cassoulet de Toulousse, Butternut Squash Soup, Spinach Salad with Spiced Pecans, Rock Salted Prime Rib of Beef with Yorkshire Pudding, Roasted Garlic and Parsnip Whipped Potatoes, Maple Glazed Carrots, Brussels Sprouts and Warm Chocolate Pudding with Fresh Berry Compote and Rum Anglaise. Tickets are $60 for adults and $30 for children ages 3- 12. (Prices include tax and gratuity.) Click here for a detailed dinner menu.

Thanksgiving recipe from our chef

On November 24, Grey Rock will serve its annual Thanksgiving Day buffet. I spoke with our chef for a little insight on what is going to be served. Among the long list of items is Apple Cabbage Salad. Boy, does that sound good. So I was able to finagle the recipe from him. Here it is:

1/4 c sugar
1 tsp cornstarch
1/2 tsp celery seed
1/4 tsp salt
1/8 tsp dry mustard
3/4 c water
3 tsp cider vinegar
2 Tbs salad dressing
2 Tbs plain yogurt
6 c shredded cabbage
2 apples, cored and chopped

Combine sugar, cornstarch, celery seed, salt and dry mustard in 2-cup microwave safe cup or bowl. Gradually stir in water and vinegar until smooth. Microwave on high, uncovered, for 3 to 3 1/2 minutes or until mixture boils and thickens slightly, stirring once. Refrigerate until chilled, about 3 hours. Mix in salad dressing and yogurt. Combine cabbage and apples in serving bowl and pour on dressing. Toss lightly to coat. Serve immediately or refrigerate. Makes 4 servings.

If that sounds good to you, you'll want to try the other dishes on the menu for the Thanksgiving holiday: Turkey with sage dressing, oyster stuffing, mashed Yukon gold potatoes, roasted root vegetables, chef carved roast beef, fresh Warren cranberry relish, pumpkin pie, apple pie ala mode and so many more I can't fit them all. Make your reservations now by calling 800.444.2812 and ask for Grey Rock.
