Irish Proverbs and History

You'll never plow a field by turning it over in your mind.

It's no use boiling your cabbage twice.

Every dog is brave on his own doorstep.

What butter and whiskey will not cure, there's no cure for.

If you lie down with dogs, you'll rise with fleas.

You never miss the water till the well has run dry.

He who pays the piper calls the tune.

The best way to keep loyalty in a man's heart is to keep money in his purse.

Proverbs cannot be contradicted.

· · · · ·

The person who was to become St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was born in Wales about AD 385. His given name was Maewyn, and he almost didn't get the job of bishop of Ireland because he lacked the required scholarship.

Far from being a saint, until he was 16, Maewyn considered himself a pagan. At that age, he was sold into slavery by a group of Irish marauders that raided his village. During his captivity, he became closer to God.

He escaped from slavery after six years and went to Gaul where he studied in the monastery under St. Germain, bishop of Auxerre, for a period of twelve years. During his training he realized his calling was to convert the pagans to Christianity, his wishes were to return to Ireland to do so.

Patrick was quite successful at winning converts. This fact upset the Celtic Druids: Patrick was arrested several times, but escaped each time. He traveled throughout Ireland, establishing monasteries across the country. He also set up schools and churches which would aid him in his conversion of the Irish.

His mission in Ireland lasted for thirty years. After that time, Patrick retired. He died on March 17 in AD 461. That day has been commemorated as St. Patrick's Day ever since.

The St. Patrick's Day custom came to America in 1737, the first year St. Patrick's Day was publicly celebrated, in Boston.

Join us on March 17 in the BoatHouse for an Irish celebration! Come for corned beef and cabbage, drink specials and lots of fun!

   Greetings,

The change in weather over the last month has been unbelievable. Shortly after I wrote you last time, we accumulated another 12 inches of snow! It was beautiful, a true winter wonderland. Well, since then we've had weather in the mid-40s. This week the snow has all melted away. The warm weather has us all anxiously awaiting Spring. I've been closely watching the ground for that first green sprout.

Here at the resort we're getting ready for the busy season. The Front Office has just released the Easter package information and the phones are already ringing. Read below for all the news and specials going on.

Take care,
Loni
