   Greetings,

Do you practice a family tradition? In my family we always have roasted chestnuts and sing carols on Christmas eve. Those might sound weird to you, but I've found that families celebrate many different ways. Listed below are some of the most common and uncommon traditions I've read about: I'm thinking about starting some in my family.

However you decide to celebrate, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Happy Holidays,
Loni

  • Christmas Traditions
  •   The Christmas Pickle: In Old World Germany, the last decoration placed on the Christmas Tree was always a pickle. It was carefully hidden deep in the boughs of the tree. Legend has it that the observant child who found it on Christmas Day was blessed with a year of good fortune and a special gift.

Christmas Tree: The Christmas tree tradition spread through Europe and was brought to the United States by German settlers and by Hessian mercenaries paid to fight in the Revolutionary War. In 1804, U.S. soldiers stationed at Fort Dearborn (now Chicago) hauled trees from surrounding woods to their barracks at Christmas.

Peppermint Pig: A century-old tradition begun in Saratoga Springs, New York, the Peppermint Pig is believed to bring good luck and good health for the coming year. After a holiday meal, the pig is cracked with a tiny hammer and shared among family members.

Roasting Chestnuts: A popular, old-world fall, winter, and Christmas tradition is to serve hot chestnuts to family and friends.

The Star: The star symbolizes the star that appeared quite miraculously in the eastern sky on the birth of Jesus Christ. The star is believed to have guided the magi, who were the three wise men from the East to find the newborn king.

Holly: The Romans used the plant to decorate their houses, temples, and deities for Saturnalia, the mid-winter feast. They exchanged holly boughs as symbols of kindness and friendship.
